They say never to work with animals- but if that statement seems barking mad to you, then an apprenticeship in animal care may just be the start to a rewarding and most fulfilling career!

Animal care is a dedicated profession, as animals need to be looked after 365 days a year. Animal care also plays a key role in the land-based industry which plays a key role in both the national and global economies. In the UK alone, the sector is worth more than £8.9 billion per year, and employs over a million employees and 500,000 volunteers.

The role of an animal carer usually deals with health, welfare, handling and the supervision of small animals. This can take place working in a zoo, a wildlife park or for the RSPCA and is seen an a perfect working environment for many which is a reason why the job is such a dream role for many.

As an apprentice, you could find yourself working in many settings and with a range of different animals. You could be grooming dogs; looking after animals in a pet shop, kennel or cattery; assisting the breeding of pedigree cats; training guide dogs; or even taking care of exotic animals in a zoo or wildlife park.

The job can be truly inspirational!

Who’s it for?

It goes without saying but you must understand and care for both animals and the environment. You’ll need to be committed to this as the apprenticeship can involve a lot of working outside in freezing and damp conditions all year round. This can take a lot out of an individual so you’ll need to be physically fit and strong with a fantastic attitude.

You need a good knowledge of biology (here’s where all those lessons in school come in hand) and you need to be able to use machinery properly.

The job isn’t for the faint hearted and you need to be committed 365 days a year!

What do I get out of it?

Your Apprenticeship will vary depending on your employer, but you could learn about basic animal training, transporting animals, feeding, watering and exercising animals, advising customers and owners, or even maintaining a clean and safe working environment. Jobs roles available after your apprenticeship can include, becoming an animal collections officer or field officer, an animal trainer or a dog groomer. Starting in one of these roles you can expect to earn a salary from between £10k-£14k.

In this 2 level apprenticeship, the frameworks to follow across the UK, generally start with an NVQ of some sort, before learning a number of relevant professional and technical certificates at the advanced apprenticeship level.
