Apprenticeships -What is an apprenticeship?

6th August 2010, 15:34

What is an apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a vocational route where you earn and learn at the same time. Apprentices work on-the-job developing their skills in a certain trade whilst working towards a qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). There are many different apprenticeships in different industries.

What levels of apprenticeship are there?

The three main levels are Intermediate Apprenticeships - studying towards a level 2 Competence Qualification; Advanced Level Apprenticeships studying towards a level 3 qualification. There are also Higher Apprenticeships where you work towards a level 4 competence qualification. In all levels you will also study for functional skills and a relevant knowledge-based qualification.

Level 2 Apprenticeships are roughly equivalent to 5 GCSEs and Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeships are equivalent to 2 A-Levels. Level 4 are roughly equivalent to a foundation degree.

Who are apprenticeships for?

A common misconception is that apprenticeships are only for 16 year-old school leavers. Truth be told they are open to anyone over the age of 16. Different sectors have different entry requirements and it also depends on the level of apprenticeship.

How much do I earn?

The minimum pay for an apprentice is £2.60 per hour, but recent studies show the average pay per week for an apprentice is £170, in some sectors is is £210.
The wage applies to:
  • all apprentices aged under 19
  • apprentices aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship
  • Like most other employees, employed apprentices get at least 20 days’ paid holiday per year on top of bank holidays.

As you progress through your apprenticeship your pay will increase.
