Jonathan and Stephen- Construction Apprenticeship
-
Jonathan Hudson and Stephen Hatherell, both aged 17, work at architecture and structural
engineering firm Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson Limited (HCD). They both completed the Young
Apprenticeship in Construction programme, supported by ConstructionSkills, the Sector
Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry and Barnsley Young
Apprentice Programme (YAP).
The Young Apprenticeship in Construction programme offers pupils between the ages of 14 and
16 the chance to get a taste of real work alongside their school studies. It’s run by a partnership
consisting of schools, colleges, training providers and employers, in conjunction with the local
authority.
Stephen and Jonathan joined the Young Apprenticeship programme while they were at school,
and both got a First Diploma in Construction (FDC).
Stephen comments: “For anyone interested in construction as a career I would highly
recommend doing the YAP. It’s a great opportunity to experience your future career first hand.”
Stephen plans to study Construction Key Skills at university, and Jonathan’s taking a Higher
National Certificate in Civil Engineering.
Jonathan says: “The YAP has provided me with an in-depth understanding of what architecture
is all about. I’m keen to take that further.”
David Peel, Director at Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson, says: “The work experience Stephen and
Jonathan gained through the Young Apprenticeship programme is invaluable. We are fully
committed to supporting them both in their further studies and careers.”
