From Fashion Design to Plant Health: Why an Apprenticeship Was the Best Career Move I Ever Made
Taking a different route
I completed the Public Sector Compliance Investigator and Officer apprenticeship as part of my role as a Plant Health and Seed Inspector with APHA.
Before joining APHA, my background was very different. I went to university, earning a degree in Fashion Design. While I enjoyed it and worked in the industry for a few years, I eventually realised I wanted a change and a new challenge.
I've always loved plants, so when the opportunity arose to join APHA and complete an apprenticeship alongside my role, it felt like the perfect fit. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I've made.
What did the apprenticeship involve?
The apprenticeship lasted around 15 months and combined structured learning with real-world experience on the job.
Each month, I completed an assignment as part of a small group of learners. We attended tutor-led sessions where we worked through presentations, shared ideas, discussed our experiences, and asked plenty of questions. We also had regular one-to-one meetings with our tutor on Teams to review our progress and get support where needed.
In total, there were 12 assignments. Alongside these, I built a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the skills and knowledge I'd gained throughout the apprenticeship.
The programme concluded with an End Point Assessment (EPA), which consisted of a professional discussion based on my portfolio and a written exam linked to the work we carry out in our role.
The best part? While completing the apprenticeship, I was gaining experience every day in my job and building a long-term career at the same time.
Support every step of the way
One thing that really stood out during the apprenticeship was the level of support available.
I received guidance from my tutor throughout the programme, as well as encouragement and practical support from my manager and colleagues. No matter the challenge, there was always someone willing to help, answer questions, or offer advice.
Putting learning into practice
One of the most valuable aspects of the apprenticeship was learning about the legislation and regulations that underpin our work.
Understanding the legal framework behind plant health inspections has helped me see the bigger picture and appreciate why the work we do is so important. It has given me greater confidence and helped me apply my knowledge more effectively in day-to-day situations.
Why was it so beneficial?
For me, the biggest advantage was being able to learn while earning.
Rather than spending years studying before entering a profession, I was able to develop my skills, gain recognised qualifications, and build practical experience at the same time, all while earning a salary.
It gave me a clear understanding of a career I genuinely enjoy and has helped me progress both professionally and personally.
My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship
Quite simply: go for it.
If you're passionate about a subject or need a change in career, don't feel pressured to follow the same path as everyone else. Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience, earn a wage, and develop skills that employers genuinely value.
As someone who completed a university degree before changing career direction, I know that there isn't one "right" route into work. My apprenticeship helped me discover what I truly enjoy and opened doors I hadn't considered before.
Working as a civil servant also comes with plenty of benefits, but for me the biggest positive is the people. There is always someone to turn to for support, and the team environment is incredibly welcoming.
