Abbie- Construction Apprenticeship Programme

In the last 5 years, Abbie Naisbitt has carried out a number of vocational placements at companies in the North-East as part of the Young Apprenticeship in Construction Programme, supported by ConstructionSkills – the Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board – and North Tyneside Learning Partnership.

The Young Apprenticeship in Construction programme offers pupils between the ages of 14 and 16 the chance to get a taste of real work alongside their school studies. It’s run by a partnership consisting of schools, colleges, training providers and employers, in conjunction with the local authority.

GCSE student Abbie is determined to pursue a career in construction and recently became one of the only students in the country to opt for a Higher Diploma in Construction and The Built Environment (CB&E), and the Young Apprenticeship pilot.

“The Young Apprenticeship (YA) scheme has helped me obtain many of the skills I’ll need for my career”, she says. “After my A-Levels, I hope to do a degree in architecture”.

As well as successfully completing the Diploma, Abbie passed the BTEC First Certificate in Construction, and got her Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card.

Mark Thompson, Managing Director at Ryder Architecture, comments: “Abbie is one of the best students I have ever worked with. She always gives her best and already has many of the skills and attributes employers are looking for!”
