The course provides a challenging and interesting introduction to the discipline of Chemistry at an advanced level. This course is suited to students who wish to pursue a career in medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, environmental areas and the chemical industries of today. It also develops the skills of analysis and enquiry, which are valuable for a wide range of careers. Content AS Chemistry covers:Foundation Chemistry:Atomic Structure, Amount of Substance, Bonding, Periodicity, Alkanes.Chemistry in Action:Kinetics, Equilibria, Redox Reactions, The Halogens, Extraction of Metals, Haloalkanes and Alkenes. Investigative and Practical Skills: Assessed Coursework on making observations and measurements, analysing and evaluating results. Features/Benefits You develop Key Skills that are highly valued by employers including: Application of Number Communication ITThe course is delivered using a wide range of teaching and learning styles including the smart board, Power Point and video presentations, group work, and practical work. Entry Requirements GCSE B/B in TWO Science subjects (Core and Additional Science, or Chemistry plus one other).A Grade C in Maths is essential, or GCSE B/C in two Sciences, as above, with a B in Maths. Progression Opportunities The study of Chemistry develops numeracy, literacy and practical skills, which are valued by employers.With different combinations of other A Levels progression to many careers is possible. Examples other than Chemistry include Optometry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Medicine, Engineering, Biochemistry, Forensic Science and Food Science.
