Key features of an apprenticeship include an individual learning plan designed to suit the needs of the apprentice, their employer and in keeping with the standards laid down by industry.
Your time in College (usually, but not always, one day a week) will provide the theory or knowledge for the job – how and why you do what you do. When not in College the training continues at your place of work, where you will be mentored and trained by your colleagues and you will put together a portfolio of evidence to show that you are competent at the tasks you do each day at work.
Teaching and assessing is carried out by tutors who are experienced in the workplace so fully understand the different pressures of combining work and study at the same time. The tutors keep up to date with new developments in their chosen subject area so that your training is interesting and relevant .
Every apprentice is required to complete Functional Skills in English and mathematics, and some apprenticeships also require other subjects such as IT.
Where next
- Further study: On successful completion of the Level 2 Apprenticeship it is possible to progress to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship or a similar level qualification. Apprenticeships are now available at Level 4 which is equivalent to a Foundation Degree.
