January, SeptemberSSTG is a non-profit making organisation providing recruitment services and training on behalf of over 30 member Companies - UK ship owners and world wide operators. We recruit aspiring candidates to train for rewarding careers as Deck or Engineer Officers for the Merchant Navy.
SSTG provides full support to cadets whilst undertaking HNC HND, programmes. The college phases of the cadets study will be offered through universities or college of further or higher education.
How do I train as an Engineering Officer?
SSTG (Ship Safe Training Group) look after the training of engineering officer cadets for over 30 Merchant Navy companies, and they offer three different study options for cadetships; HND / HNC and Foundation Degree.
Training typically lasts 3 years for HND / HNC routes. During this period you will spend time both at college or University studying and time at sea working.
What's the package?
We currently have 30 member companies that look to recruit trainee deck, engineer and ETO officers; the financial package varies depending on which company the cadet chooses.
Where will I study?
HNC & HND course are run at Fleetwood near Blackpool, Glasgow, South Tyneside near Newcastle and Warsash near Southampton.
In conjunction with the employing companies and colleges we provide full organisation, instructions and guidance during both the college and sea based phases. We monitor and supervise the progress of our cadets to ensure that they are receiving the full support they need to succeed in the completion of their training programme. This includes a strong emphasis on ensuring that the cadets are given the appropriate support to assist you in acclimatising to life, work and training at sea.
When are the intakes?
Intake dates are in January and September every year.
We offer approx 200 cadetships every year.
What if it's not for me?
This is the message from SSTG:
"There is no tie in with the sponsor company at the end of the programme, so the cadet is free to leave. If a cadet doesn't finish the course and decides to leave part way through, we do not ask for any money back. We believe that young people can make mistakes and undertake the wrong course for them. We do not wish to disadvantage them because they have decided life at sea is not for them, all of our member companies have bought into this thinking"
