What Caused The Drop In Apprentices for Young People?
28th June 2009, 09:02There's news about a worrying drop in the number of new apprentices taken by 16-18 year-olds and 19-24-year-olds. Although the number of apprenticeships has increased overall by 15%, many of these are as a result of a fourfold increase in the over 25s taking apprenticeships (perhaps linked to the statistics we discussed earlier showing that the vast majority of graduates think apprenticeships are great. So what's going on? Unsurprisingly the politicians are blaming each other....

Why you shouldn't go to university - NGTU in The Times
26th June 2009, 09:22New research suggests that half of full-time students set to graduate this summer are seriously considering postgrad options. New Survey Reveals 1 in 10 Graduates Won’t Get A Job
12th June 2009, 14:19There's a worrying report in The Guardian today for anyone who is about to graduate from university. According to new research up to 1 in 10 graduates will be unemployed six months after graduating and many more will be underemployed - when students with degrees work in low-skilled jobs. Added to this is the fact that graduates are facing the highest ever levels of debt. This comes as a result of universities introducing top-up fees where students had to pay £3,000...

University recession - are degrees recession proof?
11th June 2009, 11:42There's no escaping the recession and lately there's been a lot of talk on universities, how they will be affected by the recession and more importantly; are degrees recession proof? Recently I was asked to keynote at a careers conference at the University of West of England (I'd like to thank UWE for being forward-thinking and inviting me - I promised I wouldn't be a trojan horse!), specifically on the question of how the university will cope with the recession and whether degrees...
