Lee McQueen, Apprentice winner talks apprenticeships
HILLINGDON Training students celebrated after completing a Young Apprentice programme, at an event held at The Thistle Hotel, Heathrow on 11th May. Apprentice winner and former Queensmead pupil, Lee McQueen, helped to present certificates in Health and Social Care, Hospitality and Catering as well as Motor Vehicle, to learners from eleven Hillingdon Borough schools. A Young Apprenticeship offers 14-16 year olds the opportunity to gain a vocational qualification at Level 2, equivalent to four GCSE's at A*-C. Learners are also required to complete 50 days relevant work experience, providing them with a valuable introduction into the world of work.
Drawing on his own experiences as Sir Alan Sugar's most recent apprentice, Lee passed on some valuable advice to the students, encouraging them to be motivated, driven and determined in their approach to work: "I think what Hillingdon Training is doing is superb. If Young Apprenticeships had been available when I was at school, I definitely would have gone down that route, as a traditional education wasn't for me. This is a great achievement for these young people and an important stepping stone towards a successful career." Francesca Williams from Haydon School completed the Health and Social Care programme and said: "I'm so glad that I have done this course, and the best thing for me was the chance to spend time in the workplace. I am proof that you should never give up. I know I am capable of coping with new challenges and I've also become very confident." Peter Sale, Director of Hillingdon Training, added: "Young Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity for young people to make a successful start to their chosen career, and can propel them into further higher level training. Over 150 employers offer their time to us, supporting and mentoring our students. With the valuable educational partnerships we have made, we hope to enable even more young people to access a Young Apprenticeship in the future."
