Babcock

Huge Ambition? Go High Tech in Automotive
2010-07-26 10:45:11

Lucie Norwell is just twenty years old but has already enjoyed a tremendous career in the automotive industry. She is currently employed by Racelogic as a technical support engineer, working with high accuracy GPS systems. The technology is used in vehicle development and at track days, says Lucie. It's a very technical role and I work with high specification equipment that is sold worldwide to many well known brands such as Michelin and Ford. Lucie's work takes her into all kinds of exciting environments, including track side at racing events. Her role is just one example of the range of careers available in the automotive industry today. Prior to working for Racelogic, Lucie worked at Nissan's European Technical Centre in Cranfield, analysing all aspects of Nissan vehicles and making adaptations for European markets as well as other problem solving and analysis. This was a very varied role. One week I might be going out on the road, trying to find examples of how Europeans have different vehicle requirements from Japan and putting this into case studies and another week I could be evaluating vehicle ride and handling at Millbrook proving ground, she says. So what was Lucie's gateway into this exciting career? Lucy began by taking a Service Technician apprenticeship with Volkswagen through Babcock International Group. Getting Started: Your Apprenticeship Lucie is an illustration of the different directions in which an automotive apprenticeship can take you in the twenty-first century. As a technician with professional training, your options are much wider than the traditional route of service and repair. And service and repair work, too, has changed dramatically in recent years as vehicles become increasingly high tech. Here at Babcock we will work with you to identify the best course to suit your ambitions and we'll place you with an employer where you will earn a wage as you work towards your qualification. You'll be gaining valuable work experience as you train and your career will be well under way by the time you complete your learning programme. Babcock works with many of the best names in the automotive business including Volkswagen Group, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Jaguar Land Rover, Subaru, Chrysler, Bentley and BMW. You'll have an experienced vocational learning adviser assigned to work with you and support you throughout your apprenticeship and he or she will visit you regularly at work to assess your progress and give you extra training on a one-to-one basis. You'll also spend time out at one of Babcock's automotive academies, working with the very latest technology to gain the up to the minute skills that today's automotive businesses demand. Lucie's career began with a Babcock apprenticeship at Wayside Volkswagen in Milton Keynes. It's a three year programme, but I completed in two years. I had a real drive to succeed and put a great deal of time and effort into my programme. As I enjoyed what I was doing, this wasn't as tough as it sounds. Now's the time for you to get started and find out where your training can lead you. How Do I Apply? Visit www.babcock.co.uk/automotivetraining to contact Babcock and apply for an apprenticeship.
