Opportunities for A-Level graduates who miss out on university places

The battle for university places is proving tougher than ever this year, with more prospective students than ever battling for places. Nearly 70,000 more people applied for a university place this year compared to last year. However, the number of places on degree courses has been rigidly capped for the second year in a row.
For youngsters with a desire to work in a profession which combines personal freedom with an outdoor lifestyle, the Biodynamic Agricultural College offers 18-months vocational training in organic/biodynamic agriculture and horticulture. Unlikely as it may seem, the college still has some vacant places left on its courses, which lead to nationally recognised vocational qualifications (BTEC Level 3 Diplomas).
Interestingly, there is a high demand for graduates of these courses, on market gardens, organic farms, community food projects and with organic certification bodies. Job offers are coming in on a weekly basis, and that in a time where people are increasingly losing their jobs in academic positions.
According to a recent survey by Lantra, the sector skills council, more than 110,000 new farmers and growers will be needed in the next decade to replace an aging population of farmers – one in four of which is 55 years or older! Combined with the increasing demand for low-carbon, pesticide-free, animal-friendly food, it is obvious that there are strong possibilities for careers in the organic and biodynamic agricultural sector.
The Biodynamic Agricultural College is the specialist college for training in organic and biodynamic agriculture and horticulture. The college has a unique approach to learning, with practical skills backed up by theoretical agronomy, but also includes unusual subjects like arts, philosophy and holistic science. Graduates generally find a job within 2 months of leaving the college.
