HRH The Countess of Wessex Opens New IT & Media Block at Uxbridge College
2012-02-15 14:39:32
Uxbridge College’s new £5m IT & Media Block was officially opened by HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO on 13 December.
Her Royal Highness declared the block open by using a clapper board – a reference to the function of the new facility – at the entrance.
Addressing students, staff and guests after a speech by the College Principal, The Countess said: “I’d like to add my congratulations to all of you. Well done, I wish you all the very best with your new facilities. I am sure they will be much loved and much appreciated by every student who comes through these doors.”
Laraine Smith OBE, Principal of Uxbridge College, said: “It is a great privilege to have such a special guest to open our superb new £5m facility. Our new IT and Media Block is the latest in a series of developments designed to ensure Uxbridge College teaches industry-standard skills in an industry-standard environment. The students in the new building are learning skills which will enable them to work in thriving businesses which play a critical role in the world we live in.”
After the official opening, Her Royal Highness toured the facility in Park Road including visiting classrooms and studios where she met students and saw their work.
She went to the Apple Mac room, which is used for design courses, and the Media room where she viewed film footage created by the students which was shown on the CGI (computer-generated imagery) green screen. She also spent time with games development students – who create graphics and footage for computer games - and discussed their work with them.
During the event The Countess also met representatives from the College and other guests including The Mayor of Hillingdon Councillor Mary O’Connor and student governor Terry Howard. Guests at the opening included officials from Hillingdon Council, business and community representatives, and College staff and Governors.
The three-storey IT & Media Block brings together courses which cover computer programming, games design, CGI skills, filming, audio recording, broadcast and design. The building has 15 classrooms and is finished in anodised aluminium cladding panels with full height glazing and solar fins, which give the front elevation a contemporary and energy-efficient finish.
Facilities include computer rooms, soundproofed studios for audio and film recording, separate media control rooms, and a green screen for filming and creating 3D footage.
