ROYAL ALBERT HALL AND KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA COLLEGE OPEN THE DOORS TO OPPORTUNITIES

Kensington and Chelsea College partnered with the Royal Albert Hall to give a group of young people a life changing opportunity through a special project.
The ‘Shooting Stars’ project gave 13 young people who weren’t in education, training or employment the chance to gain a qualification in photography and exclusive access to photograph A-list events at the Royal Albert Hall.
Under the year long venture, led by the iconic London venue, the students studied on a specially designed BTEC photography course at Kensington and Chelsea College to gain the skills needed to be an event and portrait photographer.
They were also given master classes from leading photographers such as Jill Furmanovsky and Mick Hutson, and the chance to join professional photographers to shoot some of the biggest events in London including Beverley Knight’s concert, Cirque du Soleil, The BBC Proms and Spirit of London of Awards.
The project led to the students capturing more than 4000 images of which a selection has now been chosen to be featured in a special exhibition running at the Royal Albert Hall. The talented 13, who were the first ever students given access to photograph events from the press arena within The Hall, have all passed their BTEC Level 1 in Photography and are now enrolled onto Level 2.
Bruce Tanner, Head of Photography at Kensington and Chelsea College said:
“This exciting venture with the Royal Albert Hall has given a group of students starting out in photography a unique chance of shooting major stars in a high profile location.
“Throughout the project the students have gained confidence to the extent that they have been able to hold their own in the press arena with other photographers and have been able to handle smaller events entirely on their own.
“They have grown from timid raw recruits to confident photographers willing to take on challenges and move on to the next level of their photographic education. I am delighted that we’ve been able to offer this opportunity with the Royal Albert Hall to these students.”
Lucy Noble, Head of Programming and Education added:
“The Hall looks to support musical education and engage with partners to champion young people who might otherwise have little opportunity to experience live music or visit the Hall. This partnership with Kensington and Chelsea College does just that and we are very proud of the work that these now distinguished photographers have achieved.”
The exhibition of student work is free to view and runs from Wednesday 9 May until Sunday 27 May on the ground floor corridor of the Royal Albert Hall. It can be viewed when attending performances at the Hall or during free open days being held on Sat 19 May, 10am – 12.30pm and Fri 25 May, 10am- 2pm.
