Hospitality sector pledges work opportunities and apprenticeships
“Big Conversations in Hospitality” is a series of events bringing together hospitality leaders and youngsters to talk about the best ways to support and encourage young people in the hospitality industry.
Jointly organised by Whitbread, Thistle, Springboard and the British Hospitality Association (BHA) Big Conversations was recently launched in London, and this particular Conversation was chaired by Patrick Dempsey, Managing Director of Whitbread's hotels and restaurants division.
He described how his work placement at the age of 16 encouraged him to attend hotel school, saying: "I had a really good work placement. If I hadn't done that I wonder what I'd be doing now".
Whitbread, he said was pledging to fill half of all their new vacancies from people currently out of work, as well as to create five hundred new apprenticeships this year.
Previously he said, Whitbread took on hundreds of work placements, bu there was no structure to them until now.
Anne Pierce, Chief Executive of Springboard - the organisation helping young unemployed and disadvantaged people into careers in hospitality, leisure and tourism - says even though there are more than one million unemployed young people in the country, the hospitality industry has more vacancies now
than it did a year ago.
BHA Chief Executive Ufi Ibrahim says: “Given the right framework, our research shows that hospitality can generate 236,000 jobs by 2015, which is half the government’s youth contract target for the next three years.
“Hospitality is one of the very few industries in the UK creating jobs, apprenticeships, work placements and career opportunities. It is one of the very few industries where you can start at the bottom and excel right up to the very top.
“There are 200,000 businesses in the industry. If every business pledged to offer one work placement and employ one more local person, we would easily meet our growth target.”
