INTERNATIONAL ARTIST HOSTS EXCLUSIVE SEMINAR FOR KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA COLLEGE ART STUDENTS

Budding student artists from the college packed the seminar room to hear the internationally renowned Scottish artist talk about his career and some of his most celebrated work, including a 20ft Crucifixion sculpture created entirely of coat hangers.
During his exclusive one-to-one with the students, at the college’s Chelsea Centre, Mach spoke about the importance of not being afraid to push the boundaries and his penchant for using everyday materials and junk to create his artwork.
Mach said: “Art can be pretentious and sometimes there is snobbery in the materials used which is why I enjoy using materials like coat hangers and matchsticks! I’ve ended up with a reputation as a rubbish junkie. People actually ask me if I want their rubbish to turn into artwork!”
Mach is famed for his dynamic large scale collages and audacious installations and has exhibited across the globe from San Francisco to Madrid and Milton Keynes to Melbourne. Among some of his best known work is The Match Head Series – a collection of portraits created entirely from unstruck matches glued together.
Kensington and Chelsea College has a thriving art programme and the college’s Fine Art Department has an excellent success rate of placing students in higher education, including Goldsmiths and the University of Arts.
Among the college’s famous art alumni are Turner prize nominee Spartacus Chetwynd, Julie Bennett who was labelled ‘one of Saatchi's new stars’ by The Independent and Jerwood Painting Fellow, Susan Sluglett.
