Parents
This section is designed for parents and careers advisers to explain what NotGoingToUni is about and how we can help your students. The first and most important thing to state is that times change and nowadays things are hugely different to when you were younger, I’m sure!
In the modern world degrees come thick and fast and you can take a degree in anything from ‘Cornish Studies’ to ‘Wine’. On top of this there is immense pressure on young people to go to university, and this is set to stay the way it is, with the Government’s ambitious plans to get 50% of young people university by 2010.
There are always A-Level students who are adamant they do not wish to further their education onto university, and it is important not to coerce young people in this situation too much. While it is imperative that students not going to university seek an alternative, it is often very difficult to get a career. I have had first-hand experience of the difficulty of finding a job, and countless times I have applied to jobs stating ‘No experience necessary!’ or ‘No qualifications needed!’ only to be rejected due to the fact they were looking for a graduate or I needed at least one years experience! This is where we find students in the impossible situation where they cannot get the experience they need to further their career.
For this very reason I decided to set NotGoingToUni up. There are so many career options open to A-Level students, and many people do not know half the alternatives to university. For instance, many people do not know you could become a Solicitor or a Chartered Surveyor without going to university! There are many more careers like this and please look around the site to discover more.
One final thing is to remember it is important not to place too much pressure on young people to go on to higher education. There is a huge database of careers in which will bring you similar prospects to a degree.
NotGoingToUni works with your students in whatever way they want us to work. We offer advice both in the ‘real world’ and over the internet, advertise opportunities to students, help brush up their CVs and even actively help your students discover the job we hope they will enjoy. NotGoingToUni offers careers which will bring excellent prospects to young people.
We’ll soon be launching a jobs board featuring A-Level jobs, GCSE jobs, apprenticeships, trainee schemes, management careers, internships, work experience, travel jobs and much more. No longer will you need to trawl for hours on end finding suitable jobs! Coming September 2008.
