Health worker forced to give up school at 12 looks to fulfil dream of becoming a nurse

An inspirational healthcare worker who left school aged 12 with no formal qualifications looks set to fulfil her childhood dream of becoming a nurse. Audrey Lakeman, 54, who works at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, says her life was transformed after studying at The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) and is now applying to study for a nursing degree.

Slam dunk! College to launch new BTEC basketball course

The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) is to become the only college in London to offer a new BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Basketball course from September. The Basketball Academy, based at the College’s fully-equipped Sports Centre in Enfield, is run in partnership with the London School of Basketball (LSB), and was launched in 2014.

Construction students build up skills working on major Enfield housing scheme

Construction students have been gaining a solid foundation in the skills needed to work in the industry on a major housing project in Enfield. Groups of learners from The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) have been undertaking work experience at the Dujardin Mews site since June 2016. Dujardin Mews is the first phase of the Ponders End Regeneration programme and is the first social housing to be built in the London borough for 40 years.

90% of new students and apprentices satisfied with College

Each year the College, which has centres in Tottenham and Enfield, undertakes an induction survey to help improve the experience of its learners.

More than 60 apprentices and students received awards this year, with many attending a presentation evening at the College’s Tottenham Centre hosted by Principal Andy Forbes.

Prince’s Trust students learn new skills renovating children’s playgroup

Big-hearted students have given a children’s playgroup a new lease of life. The group from The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) spent a week working at Play Space - Burghley Road Under 5s Community Centre in Wood Green. They are all enrolled on a 12-week Prince’s Trust programme to help young people develop the skills, confidence, practical experience and motivation needed to get them job ready.

Plumbing is one of the world’s oldest professions dating back to Roman times. It was even considered a great choice of career by Albert Einstein, who declared in November 1954: “If I would be a young man again and had to decide how to make my living, I would not try to become a scientist or scholar or teacher. I would rather choose to be a plumber or a peddler in the hope to find that modest degree of independence still available under present circumstances.” With more than 230,000 jobs expected to be created in construction by 2020, a growth of 2.5% each year – 3.5% in Greater London – there has never been a better time to get into the industry.

CONEL teams up with risual to launch new IT academy

The College of Haringey, Enfield and North London (CONEL) and IT services and consultancy firm risual have teamed up to create a new academy to enhance the career prospects of a new generation of IT professionals. The risual Academy, which will be launched on 9 November, forms part of the risual Education programme and comprises a new cutting edge Microsoft Showcase Classroom, an Apprenticeship scheme and workshops by industry experts throughout the year.

Rail engineering apprentices’ careers on track with VGC Group

Eight newly-hired apprentices from The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) have begun their careers working on some of the UK’s biggest rail projects. Construction and engineering company VGC Group agreed to take on the group of apprentices after they completed a Pre-Apprenticeship Level 2 Diploma in Rail Track Engineering Maintenance at the College.

From accounting pre-apprentice to future professional accountant

For Arthi Mahinda the choice of an accountancy apprenticeship was a no brainer. After completing her A-levels she decided to enrol on a pre-apprenticeship programme at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) to provide her with the skills to start a full apprenticeship later this year, and has also joined its Accounting Academy. The academy, run in partnership with Leyton Orient Football Club, offers a wide range of activities, such as, sports coaching, personal branding, presentation skills, interview techniques and social media training to support learners on AAT apprenticeship and pre-apprentice schemes.

Martial Arts Academy student Chloe wins silver medal in British International Open Karate Championships two years running

Karate champion Chloe Lydon has won a silver medal at the British International Open Championships for a second successive year. The 16-year-old trains five days a week at the at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London’s (CONEL) Martial Arts Academy while studying for a Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. She was thrilled to have won another medal after repeating her performance in last year’s competition and add to her already impressive haul of medals and trophies.

Students on top of their game at Techmix

Students showed they were on top of their game at this year’s Techmix Digital Careers Show in London. Around 35 students from The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) attended at the event at Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea Football Club. Techmix featured 40 stands from leading technology companies and education providers, including CONEL, and provided an opportunity for students to network with employers.

CONEL agrees deal with Whittington Health to train up to 85 apprentices

The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) has won a contract with Whittington Health NHS Trust to train up to 85 apprentices to work in the healthcare sector over the next 12 months. The Trust provides hospital and community care services to 500,000 people living in Islington and Haringey as well as other London boroughs, including Barnet, Enfield, Camden and Hackney.

CONEL launches new partnership with Siemens to train engineering apprentices

The College is providing training for 17 new recruits to the company’s apprenticeship scheme, where they will have access to its fully-equipped workshops featuring the latest in engineering tools and equipment.

Teachers embrace latest IT education after being Microsoft accredited

Teachers at The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London are embracing the very latest in education technology after being accredited by Microsoft. Eighteen teaching staff at the College were among the first to qualify as Microsoft Certified Educators (MCE) this summer. The MCE course provides teachers with the skills and knowledge on how to use new computer technology to enhance teaching and learning.
