Whether you are revising or simply catching up on your homework, studying can be tiring work. Just like how working out in the gym will make your body tired, so study can make your brain tire. After a while you will stop taking in as much information, get bored or distracted, and simply stop working. This study fatigue will get in the way of what you want to get done, and mean that your work takes longer to complete. Not only that, but study fatigue can be all about motivation – staying on target and getting down to work can be tough, especially when you start thinking what else you could be doing instead!
Clearly, beating study fatigue will take some tactics – and so, whether you are revising or doing something else, here are 12 ways to stay studying at your best.
1. Have A Meeting
Before you get down to work, you might need some motivation. If you have friends that are also studying the same course, you might like to organise a study group to meet up and discuss what you have been learning. You can review the material while meeting up socially and having a few snacks and listening to some background music. However, remember to stay on task – you might want to set an agenda to talk about before you meet! A study group can help you to stay motivated to study, so you don’t show yourself up at the meeting.
“All work and no play….” Don’t drive yourself mad by just working all the time – take some time ot reward yourself. Just ten minutes every hour or so to have a walk, get a cup of tea, or have a snack will give you something to look forward to. Knowing that there is a reward if you get through that chapter will help you put off getting started.
Not a go-to solution, but sometimes, when you are tired, a little boost can help you push to the end. Grab a coffee or some other caffeinated drink. Research ha shown that coffee or tea can help us stay alert – so use it when you need to!
Plan your studies so that you know what you are doing each day. If you can, try to work on different subjects to keep things interesting, and break your work down into smaller chunks with time for breaks built into the calendar. This will give you an exact idea of what you need to do and let you know how well you are progressing.
5. Time A Break!
Make sure you have regular breaks. They will stop you from burning out and will actually improve your productivity (more studying in less time!). Look to take a break for 5 minutes after every 45 minutes to an hour of work, with a few longer breaks built in too if you are studying for longer.
Research has found that taking some exercise will not only boost your physical well-being, but it can help you learn too! Just half an hour of aerobic exercise (like having a run or riding your bike) can improve your brain processing speed and other brain functions!
Listening to music while you work can help lower stress levels, so feel free to play a few tunes while you study. L:ower stress will equal better study, but if you want to give yourself a real advantage try some classical music. Classical music has been shown to be particularly good at reducing anxiety and tension.
8. Go Offline
Turn off your social media feeds, silence your phone, turn off your PC – do whatever it takes to give yourself space to study without getting interrupted. If you are using a computer to study, don’t be tempted to surf the Internet – you can even find apps that will block your internet access for a short time - but we’re sure you have enough self-discipline to just not look – haven’t you?
That‘s right! You don’t need to be wearing robes or sitting cross-legged on the floor. Just take a few minutes to sit quietly before you study. Reducing stress and even boosting your attention span, a little bit of meditating could be worth a try – especially if you are stressed about an exam!
10. Go To Bed
Going to sleep may seem counter-productive (and no, putting a book under your pillow doesn’t work), but staying up too late can be a bad idea too. Staying up studying all night has been shown to lead to lower brain performance and higher stress levels. This is not what you need as you prepare for your exams! Make sure you get the sleep you need so that you can stay effective.
11. Have Some Fish (Or Nuts)
Foods high in Omega-3 acids are known for boosting your brain and even reducing stress. These can be found in oily fish like salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, sardines, pilchards and kippers. Meanwhile nuts may keep you working longer as the Vitamin E they contain helps prevent cognitive decline!
12. Do What Works For You
Whether you like to study in the morning, at night, after exercising, or with a friend, everyone has their own preferences. If you find something that suits you, then keep doing it!
