What is your calling?
Finding a place in the world of work can be a challenge. Considering how much time is spent working it would seem sensible to find an occupation that is enjoyable. So why do many people end up in jobs that they dislike and secretly dream of escaping?
All too often a job is taken initially as a short-term prospect – to get some income coming in and to get a foot on the career ladder. After a while though, time passes and what was meant to be a stepping stone to a better prospect becomes a permanent resting place. Some people spend their entire working life dissatisfied and not particularly well paid either.
It’s easy to fall prey to laziness and convenience. Taking the easy route can lead to a career path that isn’t suitable to your particular skills and temperament and can set the tone for your working life. When applying for new jobs, one can become pigeon-holed and end up in the same job with a different company. What is the solution?
Design your own life
Planning your career can seem like a daunting task, but can save you years of wasted effort. A little self-analysis can set your feet on the appropriate path.
What are you good at?
Do you have a talent that could be marketable? Are you gifted at art, music, maths, languages, sports or crafts? We all have different skill sets and inclinations. Perhaps you’d make a lousy plumber but a brilliant accountant? ‘Know thyself’ is good advice.
What do you enjoy doing?
Maybe you love being sociable and talking to other people. Perhaps you have an affinity for animals. Is managing a team something that would give you satisfaction? Do you have a creative flair? Would you prefer to work with others or alone? What would you choose to do if money were not a part of the equation?
What can you give, rather than get?
This question can help you focus on what you can contribute to the world. Would you like to be a designer, architect or carpenter? Could your baking skills allow you to set up your own business? How can you create value in the workplace?
Which jobs suit you?
Next, think about all the different possible occupations that could suit your personality, talents and ambitions. Many skills are learnable but try to assess yourself realistically.
Think outside the box
If you are attracted to the world of acting, for example, there are lots of important roles involved, from production, set design, special effects, sound engineering and many more. In the world of building there are painters, decorators, brick-layers, quantity surveyors and a host of others.
What do you need to learn?
Find out as much as possible about the career you want to follow. Who else has gone before you? Consider finding a mentor and learn as much as you can about the industry you’re thinking of entering. Can you do an apprenticeship to gain competency? List all of the things that are important to success in your chosen field of work. What do you need to do to learn them?
Have an action-plan
Set a goal and map out the necessary steps that you’ll need to take along the way. Don’t worry too much about having an exact plan – you can adapt it as you go along – but have some steps that you can take immediately, even if it’s just some research that you need to do. Breaking a challenge into small, manageable chunks allows you to take small actions every day to get closer to your goal.
Having a strong goal is helpful but remember that your goals may change. Be willing to move your targets if it seems appropriate. Be light-hearted and enjoy the step that you are on right now. It’s not just about the future goal. Maintain a balance in your life between work, chores, activities and friends. You could end up with a career that you love.
