Where do you see yourself in three years? With BP, you could be a deck officer helping to navigate a gas carrier into an unfamiliar port. An engineer keeping a multi-million dollar supertanker running. Or an electrician in charge of vital deep-sea ship communications. It’s a job, a challenge, an adventure. Think you have what it takes to jump aboard?
About the role
As an apprentice joining our programme in one of three roles – as a deck cadet, engineer cadet or electro technical cadet – you’ll split the three years between land and sea, working on one of the world’s most sophisticated international fleets.
The first phase will be spent at nautical college where you’ll get to grips with the theoretical side of things. (All training is sponsored by us – we pay your exam and course fees, and give you a generous monthly allowance.)
After that it’s time to muck in, as you spend the next phase gaining hands on, practical experience out at sea.
With your sea legs secured, it’s time to head back to dry land for some more classroom-based learning – focusing on the more complex areas this time around.
Before embarking on another trip to a BP ship where you’ll enjoy even more responsibility.
You’ll finish up with three final months of college followed by academic and oral exams. And if you pass you’ll be a fully trained officer with professional qualifications, ready to start a long-term career with a leader in global shipping.
To be a cadet, you need to be a certain type of person. A person with the mental and physical strength to deliver to demands on both land and sea. Driven and logical, you’ll embrace all aspects of the experience, happily take orders and not be afraid to muck in. Because on a huge, multi-million pound ship, it really is all hands on deck. Hours might be long, and time on land limited, but you’ll have a team ready to support you, as well as gyms, games consoles and Wi-Fi to help you chill out in your down time.
Motivated, self-sufficient, adaptable and keen to learn? For someone like you this is an amazing opportunity to get qualified, be supported while you learn, and build a career with BP.
We’re determined to build a safer, more sustainable energy future. To succeed, we need to invest. Not just in technology and research – but in our employees: the people who can make it happen. For this reason, we spend millions of pounds developing exceptional talent, including people like you. That means everyone at BP can expect ongoing opportunities to progress.
