Any company that deals with the public in any way needs a customer service department, whether they are selling products, offering financial services or providing hospitality. The jobs roles available in customer services are many and varied and there is always the opportunity for progression within the company too. Customer service employees work across the retail, financial, hospitality and sport and leisure centres. They offer advice, information on products and services, support with purchases as well as technical support and help with problems and complaints.
If you work in customer services, you are the face of the company, the connection between the company and the consumer. Your job then is very important to the success of the company. We all know how annoying it is to receive bad customer service; it can literally make us never return, and that’s if we buy anything in the first place.
You need to know your stuff and this means that you need to understand what your company does – nobody wants to be stuck with a customer service assistant that can’t help them. You also need to be able to communicate really well and this includes face to face, via e-mail or letter or on the telephone.
One of the most important roles in customer service is complaint / problem handling – turning an unhappy customer into a happy one is one of the best things you can do. It’s a hard task and being able to remain positive in the face of a grumpy or dissatisfied customer is key.
Regardless of where you are employed there are some rules for success in customer service roles. You need to be:
Prompt – don’t leave customers hanging around
Polite – No matter how hard it is, keep smiling and don’t be tempted to snap back
Professional – Remember, you are representing your company
Personable – You need to be likeable, pleasant and easy to talk to.

Getting a job in customer services
