Degree Apprenticeship - Pearson
Posted: 7th of March 2019 by Lewis Scott
Tell us a little bit about you?
My name is Jordan Kemp, I am a Pearson Degree Apprentice working within Pearson College London. I am 19 years old and from the South East of England. Before my Apprenticeship, I was a full-time student at a secondary school called Lingfield College where I studied Business, Economics and Media at A-Level. I’ve always had an interest in business and growing up within the dynamics of a family business further fueled this curiosity.
What are you studying?
BA (Hons) Business Management
Where are you working?
Pearson College London as a Business to Business (B2B) Marketing Assistant.
Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship?
I simply could not justify the cost of University, especially not knowing if there was even a job for me at the end of it all.
The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship is probably one of the most unique opportunities available today for someone my age. Being able to graduate from my degree with Chartered Manager status and three years’ work experience inside a FTSE 100 company is a very exciting prospect.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
I’ve enjoyed meeting new, like-minded people. The challenge of the work/study/life balance has taught me a lot about myself and working in Central London is also very exciting for someone my age.
What have you learnt so far during your work placement?
So far, I have learnt a lot more than I thought I would have this early on. I have learned how a large business such as Pearson plc functions and how Pearson College London, a business within it works too. I have learned how to operate a range of different software programmes used in the workplace and how to sustain a healthy work/life balance by planning my time carefully.
How has your placement helped you with your studies?
I have access to experienced professionals who are able to provide me with a unique insight into many of the business-related issues in which I am studying. Being able to apply what you are learning from the degree into you work and vice versa also leads to an enriching work and study experience.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for a Degree Apprenticeship?
To anyone thinking of applying for a Degree Apprenticeship, I would say that demonstrating a willingness to learn in both your professional and academic work is key. Whilst you are applying for a full-time job and should certainly keep that in mind during your application, it’s important not to forget that you will also be a student and you will need to be capable of studying whilst remaining effective in your job.
You will also learn a lot of different and unusual skills/competencies on the job, an opportunity you should be able to fully embrace and demonstrate this in your interviews. And lastly, do not underestimate the workload that comes with being a Degree Apprentice.
