With the New Year upon us, many people are considering their New Years’ Resolutions, however, every year there are those who make, and then fail to keep their resolutions. So, how do you make resolutions that you can keep, not just until the end of January, but right through the whole year - and beyond?
The first step is to understand that your New Years’ Resolutions are not supposed to be a total change in your life. Making your resolutions too grand or sweeping is a sure-fire way to fail, and leave yourself feeling like a failure!
Your resolutions should be manageable as well as measurable. So, if you want to eat more healthily next year, instead of just saying “I will eat better in 2015,” you should think of how you can actually do that. Perhaps you could decide to switch dessert for something else during the week, such as fruit or yoghurt, while leaving the weekend for those less healthy treats.
Overwhelming yourself by making your resolutions too large, or by not pinning down exactly how you will actually achieve them only sets you up to fail.
So, how do you decide what your resolutions will be?
The first step is to take a look back at the last year and work out what you want to change. Reflect on the past year of your life and think where you can change your lifestyle for the better.
Once you have decided where you want to improve, set small and attainable goals rather than a large and potentially overwhelming change. The important thing is recognizing an area for improvement and working towards it, one step at a time.
Keeping your resolutions realistic will help you to succeed as the year progresses. Make sure to set up resolutions that you think you will be able to stick to. So, for example, instead of saying you will go to the gym every day, perhaps just decide to go three times a week.
When it comes to your bad habits, remember that they build up and develop over time, so it will take time to change them too. It is better to focus and change one thing at a time rather than trying to make wholesale changes across your entire life.
Once you have set your small and measurable changes, get some support.
Tell friends and family so that they know what you are trying to achieve. By doing this you make the changes real, and can get support to make them happen too. You might want to team up with a friend or family member who has similar aims – going to the gym together, for example, will help you to stay motivated together.
Finally, remember that even the best-laid plans can go wrong, and you may slip up from time to time. This is perfectly normal and a part of life. Don’t beat yourself up, but simply get back on with your goals.
So, to summarise, keep your changes small, measurable, and manageable. Get some support where you can, and don’t get disheartened if you slip up – simply get back on with making the change in your lifestyle that you desire.
