How To Make Your Career Dreams Come TruePosted: 15th of May 2015 by
It may seem like a tall order to make your career (or other) dreams come true, but with a few steps you can greatly improve your chances. The exact path to take will depend on what you want to do – and you can find plenty of career advice to help with that. However, often we need to change how we see our dreams, and approach them, in order to achieve them. This can mean reframing our view of work, ourselves, or even the world at large. That said, these tips will surely help you to achieve your dreams.
1. The Overnight Success is a Myth
There is no such thing as an overnight success. Sure, you may have had a break to suddenly break into the lime-light, for example, but every success story is years in the making. There will be plenty of work in the background before the ‘success’ was achieved. In fact, you could say that your whole life is a learning experience, which could all go into creating a so-called overnight success. Once you forget the notion of an overnight success you will be more willing to accept and overcome any setbacks as learning experiences and continue to push forward.
2. Recognise Your Faults
However, you will only be able to push forward if you are able to recognise and accept your faults. It is all-too-easy to blame others when things go wrong, but you need to be able to accept your own share of the responsibility. Only then can you find where you went wrong, learn from your mistakes, and once-again pursue your dreams. It may be uncomfortable to take the blame and see your mistakes for what they are, and it will take some moments of cold, hard reality. But truly, it is the only way you will be able to recognise and improve on your weaknesses.
3. Take Control
It’s your life, and only you really know what is best for you. Yes, you should take all the advice you can get – especially if it is free. However, you don’t have to accept and act on it all, and you should ultimately know that the final decision should be yours. You know your dreams, and with a little realistic honesty (see ‘Recognise Your Faults’), you can make the right decisions for YOU.
4. Never Settle
When you have achieved a fist success, it is easy to relax and start coasting. Of course, you should take time to celebrate your successes, but also know that now is the time to redouble your efforts and push harder than ever before. As an example, how many times have you seen a band release a great debut album, only to fall flat when it came to releasing their follow-up? Once you have proved yourself, you need to go out and do it all again – if not more so!
5. Enjoy the Journey
Life is not about a destination or a dream, it is a journey that you pass through over the years,. A goal is momentary, the journey is continual, and so it is worth taking time to enjoy the whole experience. Celebrate your successes, but be ready to set new goals to chase. It is the journey that keeps the multi-billionaire business-person chasing that next big deal or contract.
