I Hate My Job
Posted: 5th of January 2017 by Martha Witcomb
Research shows that 24% of millennials hate their jobs and 66% of millennials say that they want to change careers. Collectively we are a generation who are unhappy in the workplace.
Bespoke research carried out by The Training Room shows the various reasons as to why people hate their jobs. These reasons range from hating bosses and taking orders to long hours and lack of future prospects.
What this leads to, research by The London School of Business and Finance shows, is that a huge 54% of millennials say that they are ready to change careers within 2 years (with 26% saying that they are ready to make the change within the next 12 months) Overall, as a generation we are miserable at work.
Although the research conducted by The Training Room shows that the majority of millennials are happy with their colleagues (only 5% said that they hated the people that they work with), nearly 17% of millennials that we surveyed said that they hated their boss. Not only do we hate our bosses, what was evident from the survey is that collectively we despise taking orders; 50% of all millennials hate being told what to do.
Across the millennial generation there is a mutual feeling that there is a lack of future prospects. 32% of millennials feel that they aren’t able to progress or go as far as they would like within the workplace. Whereas, 24% of millennials feel that their job is actively ruining their health.
So Why Don’t We Change?
One word: fear.
Fear is holding millennials back from changing careers.
Research by The London School of Business and Finance suggest that there are a few key areas in which fear is holding millennials back from making a change. These areas are:
- Financial - 41% of millennials cite the prospect of financial insecurity. 20% of millennials fear that they are too ‘time poor’ to invest time in changing careers.
- Social - 16% of millennials fear that there would be disruption to their family or social life.
- Emotional - 22% of millennials cite that the fear of failure is holding them back.
