We are now a few days into August and you have probably settled into your summer. You may be receiving your A-Level results later this month and are understandably nervous. Many of you will not have your future mapped out, which is good. You may feel lost on what to do now, which is natural. Now is the time to reflect on your next steps. After 13 years of hard work, your energy is flagging. If any of this rings a bell, what you might need is a break from education - a refreshing change to challenge and stimulate your senses, providing a stepping stone for higher education. Yes, I’m talking about taking a gap year.
Lattitude Global Volunteering is a youth development charity that offers voluntary overseas placements to 17-25 year olds. From working as a Medical Assistant in a hospital in Japan to teaching English in a rural school in Ghana, from instructing Outdoor Activities in the stunning vistas of the Rocky Mountains, to supporting communities through Caring in Argentina… With Lattitude you are spoilt for choice!
Our placements encourage youth development. Many of our previous volunteers have commented how much more confident, self-aware and independent they are after their placements. Others speak of the challenging but rewarding experience of volunteering. Here are a few words from Ella, who volunteered in Ecuador at CENIT, an organisation that helps to improve the lives of street children:
“I already miss the opportunity to speak Spanish all the time, and how easy it is to escape for a weekend away - only in Ecuador could you wake up to the howl of monkeys deep in the jungle, have lunch overlooking snow-capped mountains in the sierra and fall asleep in a hammock to the crashing of the waves. Admittedly such a journey would require many hours on a cramped, erratically-driven bus, but this is all part of the adventure.
I consider the five months I spent there time well spent. Without Lattitude, without my mornings making finger puppets and pasta necklaces in Camal market, my bike rides through the Atacama Desert and snowball fight in the Bolivian salt flats, I doubt I would have acquired such a range of skills, stories and memories.”
Lattitude has sent over 40,000 volunteers to over 14 different countries and 5 different continents over the past 40 years. We offer great value for money, as a placement of 12 months will include full pre-departure support, accommodation and food for £2,500. Some of the placements even pay volunteers a weekly allowance. You will also have plenty of opportunities to travel and relax in your free time! Make 2017 a year to remember. Apply now for one of our fantastic placements: https://lattitude.org.uk
