Mental Health & Your Job Hunt

This week is Mental Health Awareness week – with a focus on body image. I want to spend this week’s blog looking at how you feel about your body and our identity can impact on your job hunt and how you can remedy this.

We live in a hugely sophisticated time, with the world in which we live in evolving rapidly around us. It means that we have unlimited opportunities to see, witness and hear the lives of others at a moment’s glance, or click of a button. We have access to social media, magazines and adverts that give us so much information, which although is wonderful, often it can lead us to feel a whole lot of unease about our bodies, about our lives and how we see ourselves.

20% of people worldwide have mental health issues – that’s a huge amount of people. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and there are thousands of support mechanisms for you at school, uni, college, at home and with external agencies and many of them are completely free.

Let’s start with a question...

Take a moment to look in the mirror – what do you see when you look at yourself?

  • How do you look?
  • Do you like how you look?
  • What do you love about yourself?
  • What do you dislike about yourself?
  • How do you see your successes and failures?
  • Do you feel like you give yourself a hard time when you look in the mirror?

How does body image tie into identity and your job hunt?

If you feel low in yourself through viewing your body then this can tie in so much to your sense of self. Even if you feel strongly that you know your skills, values and direction in life, if the belief system about yourself is low then this will impact what you feel you can achieve in life and in your job.

Your work should be an extension of self and if that sense of self is off, or you feel like you’re trying to be someone else then this will impact on the type of work you do, what you are hunting for and the level of satisfaction you will achieve in your job.

Low self-esteem stemming from poor body image impacts hugely on your confidence levels. It is vital to help raise that self-esteem to ensure that you aren’t selling yourself short in any area of your life.

So how can you make positive decisions when it comes to your job hunt?

As we’ve talked about before – when you see yourself and your flaws or the areas of life where you are not succeeding, you are limiting your progress. It’s now time to focus on changing the dialogue with how you view your life so that it is more positive.

  • Firstly review the first blog that i wrote and look at your skills, your values and beliefs – what are these? Do you feel confident knowing who you are?
  • When you look in the mirror try some positive affirmations every day – this will start to programme your brain into seeing the good about yourself rather than focusing on the negative
    • I am powerful
    • I am strong
    • I am filled with purpose
    • Everything i do is a success
    • I am beautiful
    • I am intelligent
    • I will get everything i desire in life
  • Now when it comes to the job you want – try using the same positive words to help you achieve your dreams
    • I want to be X
    • I will make X a success
    • I am intelligent enough to get X
    • I will remove all fears, anxieties and worries in my life which stop me achieving my dreams
    • My skills, values and beliefs about myself align to my vision for my life

Changing the dialogue and the science

In the last two blogs i have talked to you about changing the dialogue in your life. How does this work? Dr Bruce Lipton (The Biology of Belief) talked about how ‘biological organisms adapt their biology to fit into their environment. He says in a documentary on Netflix called ‘Heal’ ‘by my ability to change my environment and my ability to change my perception of my environment, i have the ability to control my genetic activity’. He suggests that by changing the dialogue that you have with yourself, you are able to change your perception of your environment, your sense of self, your identity and how you see your body image into something powerfully positive. It is not necessarily about physically changing your environment – although if you can do that, wonderful. Instead it is focusing on changing the perception of that environment – choosing to see the good in where you’re at instead of focusing on the bad.

Positive thinking and your job hunt

Go back to your vision about your life. What do you want to achieve in your life? What is your dream job?

Now, like in my last blog i want you to do the following.

  1. Start to think about your vision – create a mood board, write down or visualise every element of the life that you really want
  2. Get practical – understand exactly what you need in order to live that life – qualifications, experience, skills etc.
  3. Create some actionable goals - in order to get to your vision

Remember that it is absolutely ok to feel low, anxious, depressed – it is a hard battle to fight because often it takes a lot to pull ourselves away from the negative. However, poor self-esteem when it comes to our bodies has an impact on just about everything that we do. It is up to you to change the dialogue that you have with yourself and understand that everything that you wish for in your life when you are feeling good is achievable. By taking steps every day to change the dialogue you have with yourself – you provide yourself with an opportunity to push the boundaries of your low self-worth and to thrive in all areas of your life.
