Some ‘Anti-Career’ Creative Career AdvicePosted: 29th of July 2015 by
If you are deciding what to do for your next step you are probably feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the advice. ‘Go to university,” “Don’t go to university,” “Take an Apprenticeship,” “Get a Job,” and so on! It can be head-spinning to even begin to wade through the options and decide what would be best for your future life and career. Of course, everyone offering advice means well, and just wants you to hear their advice, take their suggestions on board, or just make sure you are aware of all of your options, but that doesn’t make it any easier! Add to this the thoughts of your parents and teachers, plus what your friends are doing, and it can all be a bit much! This can be even more of a problem if you want to do something creative with your life, as everyone else seems to be looking at more standard choices!
So, just for a moment, ignore the advice that is filling up your head and have a think about the things you like to do. Don’t wonder about how to turn them into a career, or if you can make money from them – just think about those creative things that you are good at or enjoy.
Do you like writing? Expressing your thoughts on the page can help clear your head and make sense of things, as can making lists of pros and cons. However, if you just enjoy the creativity of writing then start a blog. It is a great way to express your ideas to the world and discuss things that you enjoy – like music, sport, movies, and so on. Don’t write to be a success at it, but just enjoy the process of creating the blogs.
Perhaps you enjoy art, in which case why not just get on with creating? Or if you love music, what is stopping you from exploring your passion and making some? There are plenty of avenues to explore in your creativity, if you like music you could form a band, write some rhymes, or even just write a blog about it.
By doing something because you enjoy it, you will find that your skills in that area increase. This will happen without you really noticing, so long as you actually get up and get involved! If you like drama, why not join a local drama club? Sure you might not make it to Hollywood, but you will be keeping a love alive. Leaving school or college doesn’t have to mean the end to these creative outlets – just let yourself enjoy them.
It is through this participation and enjoyment that you can actually end up doing something to really change your life and find your dreams. It is not just about improving your skills and knowledge in something you enjoy, but as you get involved, you become far more likely to meet influential people and make connections that could open up a whole new career for you.
When you genuinely feel you are ready to turn your hobby into a career, then you can take the plunge, but until then, simply enjoy doing what you do and immerse yourself in the creativity of it all. Even if you are earning a wage doing something else, you can change direction. Most people will change their jobs, employer, or even entire career paths during their working life, so don’t worry if you don’t know exactly what you want to do…
Don’t think about your career and your career may come and find you!
