Why are More and More People Taking Gap Years?

Taking a gap year is becoming increasingly popular with young adults seeking life experiences and adventure, with many graduates shunning the world of work and traditional graduate schemes in favour of packing their bags, bagging great hotel deals and discovering all the world has to offer. Why Taking Time Off is a Good Option

It’s important to remember that taking a gap year isn’t the same as going on an extended holiday, while you’ll definitely find time to relax, this is a journey of self-discovery, learning, and pushing yourself. It will push you to become more confident, independent and practical. You will meet a variety of new people, experience new cultures, and learn to stand on your own two feet in an environment outside your comfort zone. Leaving the safety net of your home can be daunting but is an incredibly satisfying experience that will broaden your mind and give you a new outlook on life.

If you like the sound of experiencing something new, enhancing your personal development and enjoying time to be creative and free, then a gap year could be right for you. There are various different options when it comes to taking a year out. For example; work abroad schemes are a great way to make the most of your gap year and boost your CV at the same time. There are many job opportunities and you may even discover a new passion. You could apply for experience in fields including marketing, teaching, hospitality and administration. Alternatively, you could look for postings at summer camps in America and ski resorts in France which can provide a lively and social atmosphere. Working abroad is an ideal option if money is limited but you have a real thirst for travel!

Travelling Options

If you want to spend your time doing good and helping others, then volunteering schemes are an alternative route to explore. Whilst your volunteering position may not be paid, they do often come with the offer of free or reduced accommodation fees and meals in exchange for your help. This can save a lot of cash that may otherwise be spent on hostels, and it provides the perfect opportunity to network and make new friends.

Once you’ve decided what you want to do on your year out, you need to make a decision on your destination. Thailand is considered the top choice for backpackers; it throws you into a completely different culture and is bursting with natural beauty to explore. It's also very cheap (which is ideal for budget backpackers). Thailand offers plenty of volunteering experiences and is particularly popular for those looking to work with animals, just be sure to do your research and select a genuine sanctuary.

Another popular choice, especially for first timers, is Australia. With the bonus of English-speaking locals and endless sights and activities, there are also tonnes of work opportunities. Whether you want to pick up bar work or gain experience in an office. If Oz isn’t floating your boat, then why not consider an activity-led year in New Zealand? Another popular choice with gap year travellers, New Zealand is the perfect destination for adventure seekers and outdoorsy types. If you’re looking for hiking, climbing, water rafting, and bungee jumping, this is the place for you.
