Your Own Personal Brand – And How To Use ItPosted: 21st of January 2015 by
You are your own personal brand. You may not realise it, but everywhere you go, your brand speaks for itself. Just like any company or business brand, your own personal brand can be damaged by a bad reputation, or improved with the right management. So, how do you build a good brand that will help, rather than hinder you in life.
The first step is to be conscious about it. Instead of drifting through life, seemingly from crisis to crisis, you should start to pay attention to how your brand speaks to others. Take a look at your clothes, for example, what do they say about you as a person? Don’t just think about when you are all dressed up for a job interview or other important date, but what about day-to-day? Do you turn up at work in a crumpled shirt that you have been wearing for the last three days? If so, your personal brand may need a little tidying.
This is not to say that you should aim to be something you are not – that wouldn’t work at all. It wouldn’t be your personal brand then, would it? No, instead just have a think about where you can perhaps sharpen things up a little.
As well as your appearance, you might want to have a think about how you are with people. Everyone has good and bad days, but others might not know or care if you had an argument with your friend last night, so why let it ruin your chances today? Alternatively, if you are the sort of person to gossip about others, then people may start to wonder if you are talking about them too.
Your personal brand is, in effect, how you present yourself to the world. Think of how someone like David Cameron projects himself to the public, and then compare him to a name like the rapper, Jay Z. You will see that they have very different personal brand identities – and don’t think these were left to chance either. Both will have teams of people working hard to help both of these names to project and maintain the right image to the public.
You may not have a P.R. team working for you (just yet?), but your personal brand still exists. Think about how you act and how you appear, to others. By being more mindful of your actions you can shape how you are seen by the world. You may not be feeling confident, but nobody needs to know that, unless you show them by how you act or in what you say.
Of course, your personal brand is not just in person, but also online. Be thoughtful about what you post to social media or write in a blog, as these will also be used by others to determine who you are. Be careful not to post anything that you wouldn’t want your boss, teacher, or parents to see. As a rule, this should keep you fairly safe from any glaring mistakes online!
When you get used to being in control of your personal brand it will become like second nature, allowing you to put bad habits aside and always be at your best… Well, almost always – but nobody’s perfect – not even David Cameron or Jay Z!
