Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a way of combining working with studying. During a typical apprenticeship a student would work for a company but also go to college to study a related subject. You would be supported by an experienced member of the staff who will teach you the hands-on skills you need.

Over a period of between 1 to 3 years, an apprenticeship allows you to combine earning and learning and you would finish the course with an NVQ (or a BTEC or City & Guilds). Normal apprenticeships would result in a level 2 NVQ (roughly the same as doing 5 GCSEs) and Advanced Apprenticeships result in a Level 3 (about the same as 2 A-levels). The Higher Apprenticeship incorporates a work-based learning programme and leads to qualifications at Level 4 and above, where Level 4s and 5 are equivalent to a higher education certificate, higher education diploma or a foundation degree, Level 6 is equivalent to a bachelor degree and Level 7 is equivalent to a master’s degree.

Whatever the type or level of apprenticeship taken, each one is defined by its own 'apprenticeship framework'. These came into being in 1994 following a government-led re-organisation of how apprenticeships were taught and managed. These frameworks were overseen by the Sector Skills Council and initially counted over 150 in total. In the following years the number expanded considerably, drawing in more providers outside of the traditional manufacturing and guilds-based sectors and by 2009 the list had expanded to over 190. Although there were now more options to choose from (210 in total in November 2014) there was some concern from various bodies and employers groups that there were gaps in the supply of apprenticeships to adequately meet the needs of a modern economy, so following the Richards Review of 2012 and a change in funding arrangements it is anticipated that Apprenticeship Standards will replace all frameworks by 2017. It is expected that up to 3 million Apprenticeships will be delivered via the Apprenticeship Levy by 2020.

Until that time, you can still be sure that an apprenticeship is a highly valued and rigorous qualification which is highly sought after by hiring companies and institutions. So see what you can find in our pages and start your journey to a fulfilling career.
