CHARLOTTE DODD, 20, IS IN THE SECOND YEAR OF A CONSTRUCTION & BUILT ENVIRONMENT TRAINEESHIP
“I started working for Balfour Beatty on a temporary contract and after a time, they offered me a traineeship with a day a week at college. I’m really glad I accepted – it’s had its challenges, but with the support I’ve had from my team I have developed a broader understanding of the construction world than I think I would have been offered at college.
“Instead of just writing essays, my day is really varied and working closely with others on a live project has meant my confi dence has grown massively. To think I am working with a professional team on making the M25 a Smart motorway, something that will make a difference to thousands of people makes me really proud.
“Not only are all these experiences transferable to other careers, but I will also complete my apprenticeship with a nationally recognised qualifi cation – a BTEC at Level 3, equivalent to two A-levels. After that, I hope to be able to continue my studies at university. In fi ve years time, fi ngers crossed, I will be practicing as a qualifi ed quantity surveyor.”
