Chloe Etheridge, 1st Year Civil Engineering Apprentice, BAM Nuttall
I believe that the BAM Nuttall apprenticeship scheme is a great way to develop and achieve with and throughout the company. It offers an opportunity to gain academic qualifications, but more importantly invaluable training on site alongside an experienced team of employees. I think the apprenticeship scheme is more beneficial than a full time educational route as gives you the chance to work with BAM employees of all positions and job roles and start creating a network of colleagues that you can call upon for support or advice.
After completion of the first college block I have been welcomed into my first site placement. I am working on the Crossrail contracts (the biggest construction project currently in the UK) which is a once in a lifetime experience that will provide much experience and memories for years to come. It has given me the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading contractors and engineers to help identify solutions to real problems; with an end result of transforming rail transport in London. I am gaining unique frontline experience on a major infrastructure project, picking up transferable skills that I can take with me to differing ranges of future projects. This programme as a whole has allowed me to gain knowledge from varied aspects of the civil engineering and construction industry, all of which have been valuable learning experiences that I would not be able to gain from taking the traditional university route. I am aiming to become a chartered civil engineer, branching off into a specialist section in civil engineering. Hopefully the apprenticeship scheme can help me and my peers develop into becoming the next generation of leaders for BAM Nuttall, in a growing industry where skills will be in huge demand in the future.
