Apprenticeships have been a hot topic in the last couple of years, as the government has got behind the traditional route into work by urging young people and businesses to consider them.

But do they really lead to long term career success for the young people who choose to earn their stripes as apprentices?

Paul Smith started as an apprentice with Accor in 2006 at an Ibis Hotel at the age of 16 and since then has worked his way up through various roles to Assistant General Manager at a major London hotel.
