How long have you been running an apprenticeship scheme?
15+ years and we have around 50 apprentices.

Tell us about your apprenticeship programme.
Our Finance Higher Apprenticeship scheme aims to develop A-level or equivalent qualified individuals into Chartered Management Accountants with a broad understanding of all aspects of finance and how these fit into the wider business organisation.

They are designed as an entry level role into the accountancy arena; you will study towards your CIMA qualification whilst doing a real job and earning a competitive salary from day one.

On Level 4 you'll complete the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting over a two year period. This will be studied alongside the relevant skills and behaviours to be successful in your role. To complement your studies, the Apprenticeship has been designed to expose you to a variety of finance roles. Each role will provide you with the opportunity to develop your finance and business acumen as well as growing your soft skills.

If you demonstrate the aspiration and potential to further excel in your field, you'll have the opportunity of progressing onto Level 7 for an additional three year period. We will continue to support you towards your full CIMA qualification.

Why do you use CIMA in your programme?
Finance at BAE Systems is a very hands-on profession and involves working in demanding environments, so the tact, confidence and tenacity to challenge the accepted and manage finances robustly at ground level is crucial. The CIMA qualification is well placed to prepare students to operate effectively in a finance role within industry in these types of environments.

What future do you see for the apprentices in your organisation?
It will equip them with all the practical knowledge, experience and skills to become one of the senior finance leaders of the future within BAE Systems.

What benefits does BAE Systems see in taking on apprentices?
A career in finance is exciting, challenging and diverse! Today's finance professional must be highly skilled and flexible enough to quickly adapt to the rapid changes of our environment. Our goal is to develop people who are highly motivated and trained with the right skills to effectively guide our operations so that our business can grow. Our finance apprenticeship scheme provides us with a platform in which to do this; grow our own talent!

Why would you recommend an apprenticeship to an employer?
Our apprentices are highly regarded and appreciated members of our organisation; by nurturing and growing talent from an early stage, you can have a highly skilled, knowledgeable and loyal workforce for the future. We have many senior leaders (including our group Finance Director) who have progressed through the company and started on our apprenticeships schemes.
