As the capital of Europe's oil-and-gas industry, the city has become a global technology and support centre for many offshore engineering and service companies as well as the core service provider for the UK’s North Sea oil rigs and energy exploration businesses. In total some 40,000 jobs within Aberdeen are directly dependent on oil and gas (which is a third of total employment within the city).
The main apprenticeship recruitment opportunities for school leavers are therefore to be found in oil and gas engineering specialties, offshore drilling and oil rig maintenance.
The rest of the local economy is mostly built around servicing the high-income professionals of oil workers, engineers and executives who work for companies like Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Petrofac, Tullow Oil, Premier Oil and others. This means there are apprenticeship and trainee opportunities in financial and accounting companies, IT support, hospitality and customer services, construction and retail sectors.
Aberdeen unemployment is low at around 4% (Aberdeenshire at 3%) and so generally there is a high level of employment opportunity.
Other apprentice vacancies in the local economy can be found within: Food and drink (with firms making whisky, baked goods, canned goods and seafood), tourism, and there is a considerable amount of university employment and research activity plus mainstream healthcare service jobs.
