School Leaver Jobs and Apprenticeships in Birmingham

As Britain's Second City – Birmingham is an important place, not just for the economic good of the country, but also as a destination for apprentices and school leavers looking for work. Apprenticeships in Birmingham have increased from just 2,010 starts in 2005/6 to over 10,590 in 2013, according to Office for National Statistics figures.

So where has the demand for apprentices manifested itself in Birmingham? Which industries are particularly hungry for young people looking to get a start in their chosen career? One well-known element of the West Midlands' economy is the retail sector in Birmingham. This ranges from the gigantic Selfridges in the centre of the city to the world-famous jewellery quarter, both of which have a huge demand for new workers, including school leavers looking for their first full-time position. Alongside retail, the area is strong in manufacturing. Whilst many people outside of the West Midlands erroneously assume UK manufacturing died here with the exodus of the automotive industries, it actually still thrives in the area, having become more focused toward high-end manufacturing. So plenty of modern and higher apprenticeships are available for those with a passion for engineering.  In addition to these sectors, Birmingham is also a centre for finance-related jobs and service sector vacancies.
