Apprenticeships and traineeships in Northamptonshire have increased from 2,790 starts in 2005/6 to 7,690 in 2013, according to Office for National Statistics figures. While the city's past as a shoemaking centre still survives in the presence of the large shoe factories, most of which are now given over to office space – there are still some remnants of the industry – with Wildsmith Shoes and Edward Green Shoes still operating in the area.
Other business sectors of importance in the county are finance and distribution (logistics). It's position in the centre of the country with the M1 running very close by, and the M40 and A1 also relatively close, has attracted many companies to base their transport depots in and around Northampton town.
