Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship – Defence Submarines
Duration: 4 years
Starting salary: £12,600 per year
Location: Raynesway, Derby
When you’re building, manufacturing, inspecting or repairing some of the most advanced power systems in the world, you need to be an expert at what you do. That’s why we invest so much in training our Advanced Engineering Apprentices, and offer the sort of real-world experience you can’t get anywhere else.
You’ll join us in our Defence Submarines business, helping keep the UK safe, as for over 60 years we have provided the power for the UK Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet. Nuclear power is incredible – just one spoonful of uranium is all it takes to power a fully-submerged submarine on a full circumnavigation of the world and the entire fleet can operate for over 20 years without needing to be refuelled thanks to our revolutionary technology. And it doesn’t end there. We’re leading a revolution in nuclear power that is already seeing us develop this technology for many other uses, from unmanned underwater vehicles, to microreactors and synthetic fuel, to even exploring space. All while reducing harm to our own planet. It’s an amazing time to join us.
You can expect all the training and qualifications you need and the support to develop your skills and knowledge. We’ll help you shape your future and build a great career.
What you’ll do
In your first year, you’ll gain a strong foundation in the practical skills you need at our Apprentice Academy in Derby. Over the following three years, you’ll broaden and deepen your knowledge through a range of attachments within Rolls-Royce Submarines as part of our brand-new Nuclear Skills Academy, dedicated to developing the nuclear talent of the future.
This is hands-on work. And whether you’re producing, building or maintaining our power systems, or making and maintaining the tools we need to a high standard, you’ll be making a big impact. Throughout your apprenticeship you can expect to train on state-of-the-art products, equipment and machinery, guided and supported by our experts.
You’ll be working on live projects and earn as you learn through formal training as well as practical experience. All while working towards completing your Apprenticeship Standard and gaining relevant engineering qualifications.
What could you become?
We have roles as Machinists, Inspectors, Welders, Fitters and in Manufacturing Services and you’ll develop specialist skills in your chosen area.
What you'll need
You’ll need a minimum of 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4/C which must include Maths, English Language, Science and one other subject at grade 4/C.
Beyond your qualifications, we want to see evidence that you're genuinely interested in the practical side of engineering or hands on activities. For example, we'd like to hear about how you tinker with cars, bikes or motorbikes; or about an engineering project you've done at school or work, or a club you've been involved with. We'll provide you with a fantastic framework and all the opportunities you need to progress, but it'll be up to you to lead own your development. So, you must be full of initiative, adaptable, eager to learn and driven to succeed.
Due to the nature of our work in Defence, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to Full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting. To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a minimum of a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.
What you'll get
On top of a competitive salary, you can look forward to an excellent range of big-company benefits. But the best reasons to join us are the outstanding career support you'll enjoy from day one, the debt-free qualifications you'll have at the end of it, and the chance to build an amazing career in an environment where you can be yourself and be your best. At Rolls-Royce, you’ll be included, supported, recognised, developed and empowered to succeed.
