Apprentice IT Technician

We have a fantastic opportunity for two IT apprentice technicians to join the IT Service team at Newcastle University. This will be a Level 3 apprenticeship with the view to progress onto a Level 4 apprenticeship qualification thereafter. 



Vacancy Description:


The apprentice IT technician will work flexibly across the IT Service to learn and develop all of the relevant IT skills and knowledge to give them the capability to provide technical support across a variety of areas. The work may take place within any of our buildings, or be on any of our sites. Soft skills will also be developed during this period to help strengthen skills such as communication and networking.



It may involve working with staff regarding teaching, research or administration. Also working with students at all levels, supporting teaching spaces and student projects.  You will be based in one of our city-centre University campuses, however, on occasion you may be required to travel and support other local Newcastle University sites.



You will also be required to attend classroom based training and workshops at a local training provider (QA) to pursue the academic aspects of the apprenticeship until these have been attained to an appropriate level.  You will also attend additional ad-hoc training as and when required for the purposes of the job and apprenticeship with opportunity to shadow and have exposure to other IT functions across the University.



The successful candidate will work as part of a team in a fast-paced IT environment with extensive opportunity to develop their practical IT knowledge within a professional, higher education establishment. You will engage with users directly on varying levels in supporting and resolving IT requests.  



Main Duties/Responsibilities:



Preparing PCs (including build, configuration and installation)


  • Learn about Active Directory, SCCM and how these are used within the University, including installation of Windows and application software. Learn how to install PCs, including safety considerations.



Computer Upgrades and Decommissioning


  • Learn about all aspects of the computer equipment lifecycle, including upgrades and eventual decommissioning and disposal according to WEEE regulations



Computer Equipment Fault Finding


  • Learn and develop computer and peripheral fault finding skills and techniques.



Computer Software Installation and Licensing


  • Learn about license restrictions and the importance of ensuring that valid licenses exist before installing software.
  • Supporting Computing Labs and learn about the academic year and how the IT workload changes over it. Be a student facing member of NUIT who will take students’ requests and find how to answer them.



Prioritisation and IT Service Management


  • Learn to use IT Service Management tools and how to prioritise and manage incoming tasks.



Supporting Specialist Peripherals and Laboratory Computers


  • Learn to support multi-function devices, specialist Audio Visual equipment and computers interfacing with both teaching and research laboratory equipment.



Supporting Linux, Mac OSX or other Operating Systems


  • Learn about different operating systems and how to support, manage and install them.





  • At the latter stages of the apprenticeship period we would expect our apprentices to work towards any IT certification relevant to their working level.



Further develop fault finding and fault diagnosis skills


  • This will be developed as experience grows by working alongside experienced IT staff.



Successfully complete all relevant further education courses.


  • This is to ensure academic aspects of the apprenticeship are achieved to the required standards.



Undertake any other relevant


  • This is to develop soft skills as agreed with their manager or the Faculty Trainee and Training Coordinator.



Undertake any relevant health and safety training.


  • This will be in line with University Safety Office requirements as well as any other mandatory requirements. 



Desirable skills:


This is a hugely rewarding and challenging opportunity. At times it is a very hands-on and physical role therefore it would be essential that the successful candidate was physically able to complete certain tasks required for the job.



They must also possess:


  • Demonstrate interest in IT and its uses (essential)
  • Has experience of working in an operational IT environment (desirable but not essential)
  • Good communications skills
  • Display a practical and methodical approach
  • Good organisational skills 



Personal qualities:


  • Ability to work either in a team or independently
  • Ability to use own initiative within set boundaries
  • Pay attention to detail
  • Has a genuine desire to learn and develop within an IT based role
  • The ability to comply with workplace regulations, including Health and Safety regulations 



Desirable qualifications: 


  • GCSE’s Grade A-C (or equivalent) in Maths, English and Science (essential) 
  • A Levels in Maths, English, Science (desirable) 



Future prospects:


After successful completion of the apprenticeship, it would be anticipated that the apprentice will have enough skills and experience to make them a strong candidate to start work as a qualified member of technical staff. The apprentice will combine on the job skills and knowledge gained in the workplace along with off the job further education to ensure that this is achievable. There may also be opportunity to undertake further courses to continue your personal and professional development.
