BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance - Vocals - London

If your ambition is to be a professional vocalist, then ICMP is definitely the place for you. ICMP offers an industry-aligned vocal degree course for singers looking to take that next step towards a long-term career in music.

You’ll cover a broad spectrum of musical learning – from developing competent musicianship, theory and music reading skills, and understanding the way the music industry operates, to composing, arranging and recording songs, and becoming highly skilled in the use of industry-standard music technology.

When you study music in London with ICMP, you’ll become part of the wider ICMP vocal community and will be challenged to build your technical expertise, perform to professional standards and make meaningful contributions to the bands and working situations you find yourself in. You may also be asked to master some of the additional skills that the modern vocalist needs in today’s working environment, such as building advanced vocal techniques, developing your stylistic awareness across a wide range of styles, and becoming an adaptable, creative and modern session vocalist and vocal coach. You may also study commercial vocal styles such as R&B and indie, as well as backing vocals and percussion skills. 

You’ll undertake your studies using a wide range of industry-standard equipment, including PAs by Yamaha, Peavey and HH; microphones by Shure, Neumann and Sennheiser; and access to recording and production rooms featuring the latest studio software and equipment such as Logic, Pro Tools and Ableton Live.

Vocals Degree Course Overview

A dynamic and challenging programme, this singing degree course will provide you with professional playing, performing and musicianship skills as well as the tools and knowledge required to develop and sustain a career in today’s modern and diverse music industry.

During the course, you will develop relevant music industry skills and effectively prepare for the real world of the career musician through playing, practising and performing. You will be challenged to achieve high levels of musicianship and instrumental skill.

The study of established genres, styles and repertoire sits at the core of the BMus degree. Students develop a wide and comprehensive understanding of genre conventions through study in their principal instrument, with the intention of enabling them to function in a variety of performance and music-making contexts upon entry into the workplace.

This aim is supported by an embedded range of learning activities in subject areas such as music theory, music technology, music production, aural perception, technique and sight-reading.

Ultimately, by graduating from the BMus degree you will become fluent and literate in the language of popular music, capable of working in creative and collaborative professional environments, and ready to begin your professional career.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will typically have A levels, BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma or International Baccalaureate equivalent to 80 UCAS points. In addition, you should hold GCSE Grade C or above in English, or suitable equivalent, such as Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Adult Literacy/Numeracy.

We also welcome applications from mature applicants who may have no formal qualifications but who can nevertheless demonstrate their suitability for study through appropriate skills and experience.

All applicants will be invited to audition. 

Vocal Degree Course Fees

Studying a singing course at ICMP makes financial sense too, with the fees for ICMP music degrees significantly less than those at many traditional universities, and also much lower than other UK music education providers - making studying music at ICMP in London great value as well as great fun.
