CNC Machinist Apprentice (Production Manufacturing)
Job Description
Are you looking for a hands on apprenticeship opportunity, where you will learn how to programme, set and operate CNC machinery? As a CNC Machinist Apprentice, you will learn how to use engineering drawings and follow standard operating procedures whilst working in a manufacturing environment.
The CNC Machinist Apprenticeship is one of the new improved Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Standards.
In your new position, you will be trained, supported and monitored throughout the process. You will be required to attend PETA’s Havant training center for off-the-job training. The majority of skills development training in years 2, 3 and 4 will be completed with your employer at your place of work.
You will be employed whilst you are completing your apprenticeship this will include 18 months of day release training at PETA Ltd where you will complete your Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) qualification. This will include:
• Preparing and using Manual Turning Machines
• Preparing and using Manual Milling Machines
• Preparing and using CNC Milling Machines
• Preparing and using CNC Turning Machines
• Using fitting and assembly Techniques.
• Producing Mechanical Engineering Drawings using a CAD System
• Conducting business improvement activities
• You will also complete the Level 2 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Technical Knowledge).
• You will be expected to progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) delivered in the workplace by your PETA assessor. You will be day released for a further 24 months to complete a Technical certificate (Level 3) as part of your advanced apprenticeship framework. This will be the Level 3 Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge).
• You will also achieve Functional Skills in Math’s and English at level 2 (if you have not already achieved C+ or a Grade 4+ in these disciplines)
As a CNC Machinist Apprentice, you role will entail being able to receive and check materials to ensure that all raw materials are available and correct . You will be using engineering drawings and technical specifications to set and operate the machinery.
This a process driven environment using the proven techniques, including applying work holding arrangements utilising specialist tooling. In your role:
- You will learn how to programme, set and operate modern CNC equipment as well as set and operate manual mills and lathes.
- You will plan how to complete milling operations, programming data into CNC Mills and Lathes using chucks, fixtures and vices.
- As you gain experience you will take responsibility for adjusting a range of machining parameters to maximise machining outcomes producing products with a high degree of accuracy and finish, ensuring quality standards are achieved.
- You will use conventional mechanical measuring equipment including Vernier’s, Micrometre’s to check that work is correct.
Essential Skills
As the ideal candidate for the CNC Machinist Apprentice role, you will have the following skills and competencies:
- 5 GCSE's at grade C or above (or equivalents) to include Maths and English are essential.
- You will be methodical and enjoy problem solving
- Your motivation and drive are the assets that will be best appreciated.
- You will possess good communication skills with the ability to communicate with peers and management
- You will need to be open minded and willing to develop your knowledge and skills to support your future development
