Degree Apprenticeship – Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer

Modern construction and mining machines now contain numerous electronic systems to control the engine, transmission and hydraulic systems and provide user friendly interfaces to the operator. Our engines require highly complex control systems to provide clean and efficient power. Today, most machines are also connected to the ‘Internet of Things’ via telematics systems and autonomous operation is becoming a reality.
Embedded Electronic System Design and Development Engineers are at the heart of this rapidly growing area of technology and will be key to the future of the business. As an apprentice in this field, you will join a team of 100 engineers working at the Peterborough facility and be part of a global team of over 2000 Electronics and Electrical systems engineers within Caterpillar.
What experiences can we offer you?
Our 4-5 year Apprenticeship combines University-based learning with on-the-job work experience to give the apprentice insight into various engineering job roles within a large business.
The academic study portion of the apprenticeship will be delivered through an accredited university on a day or block release basis (which may include time away from your normal place of work) and will lead to a BEng degree qualification in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. All tuition fees will be paid for by the company.
The workplace learning elements of the apprenticeship will be delivered through a combination of placements and assignments within teams working on real development projects. Working alongside experienced engineers who will provide on-going coaching and guidance, the apprentice will gain experience and knowledge in the following areas:
- The full range of activities undertaken by engineers working within the team including: system specifications, embedded software design and development, control system modelling and analysis, component selection and validation, system level development and validation, product health analysis or quality issue resolution.
- Product development processes, project management, health and safety, product regulations and commercial processes associated with a large scale global business.
- Soft skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and leadership so that you can operate effectively within a global team.
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice is expected to be capable of undertaking a junior engineer role with full responsibility for delivering their assigned tasks within a project team. Beyond that, there will be opportunities to develop into more senior engineering roles and onwards into leadership roles depending on aptitude and ability.
What are we looking for?
You can demonstrate a strong interest in applying the latest Electronics technology to the control of machines or engines. An interest and understanding of mechanical and electronic engineering is highly beneficial.
Candidates who have demonstrated such an interest via projects involving the application of basic microprocessor based systems or who have gained other practical engineering experience via school/college projects, hobbies or previous work experience would be preferred.
You are diligent, with a focus on quality and with the ability to apply your initiative in working independently or as part of a team. Good communication skills are required to interact with people from the business at all levels. In addition, you will need the discipline and commitment to pursue the apprenticeship academic studies.
Qualifications Required: 5 GCSEs at grade C /4 or above, including Maths and English. Plus 3 A Levels at grade C or above (or equivalent), including Maths and at least one further STEM subject such as Physics, ICT, Computing or Electronics, Design & Technology
