Based in Laindon, the Phoenix Primary School are seeking to appoint a Facilities Management Apprentice to join their Premises team. The successful candidate will contribute to the smooth running of the school by carrying out a range of caretaking duties, including porterage, cleaning and maintenance, under guidance of the Premises Manager.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring that access is available to those persons who are making deliveries or carrying out repairs
  • Assisting in fire drills,in line with the school policy
  • Changing light bulbs, tubes, starters, fuses and plugs
  • Sweeping hard areas and emptying rubbish bins
  • Ensuring all hard areas, paths and fields are free from litter, weeds and debris
  • Clearing rubbish from around the central bin area and ensuring it is kept clean and tidy.  Washing bins as requested.  Reporting any signs of vermin to the Premises Manager
  • Helping set up rooms as required for meetings, parents’ evenings and examinations
  • Cleaning blocked drains, sinks, urinals, toilet pans etc.
  • Effecting repairs to toilet seats, gates, locks, door handles, door hinges, school furniture, toilet cisterns/ball cocks, coat hooks, shelves, taps, drinking fountains, etc. under guidance of the Premises Manager
  • Locking unlocking gates, windows, doors around the site as required
  • Reporting damage/vandalism to the Premises Manager for action
  • Assisting other school staff as required
  • Porterage duties in connection with all school use
  • Movement of furniture daily or when required
  • Undertaking duties to keep site open by clearing snow and ice
  • Undertake any other tasks reasonably required

  • Ability to use tools and equipment to maintain buildings under the guidance of the Premises Manager
  • Ability to regularly handle/carry heavy items
  • Flexible attitude to working hours to cover other premises' staff absences
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbally
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Suitability to work with children

Desired qualifications

GCSE C grade or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths, or equivalent. PROCAT will determine your suitability at an interview.
