Are you ready for work experience in the great outdoors? This is an exciting opportunity to work with Gedling Borough council, with a variety of practical roles available, including ground maintenance, horticulture and arboriculture, and street cleansing. 

This opportunity will give you a valuable work-based learning experience, and advice and guidance that can lead to an apprenticeship with the council and future employment. 

The traineeship will involve: 

Grounds Maintenance

  • Planting and maintaining flower beds
  • Maintenance and line marking for sports fields
  • Mowing grass, weed spraying, hedge cutting
  • Turf maintenance and weed control


  • Tree pruning and chipping 
  • Hedge Pruning
  • Tree planting

Street Cleansing

  • Sweeping, cleaning streets / car parks, and litter picking
  • Fly tipping removal
  • Graffiti removal 
  • Leaf blowing

This 16 week traineeship will offer valuable experience for those who are practical minded, and want the opportunity to work outdoors within a diligent team. It will also help to improve your communication skills, time keeping skills, and your practical abilities. Candidates will need to be hardworking, willing to learn, and committed to the role. Your work experience will take place from Monday to Wednesday each week.  

If you haven’t got your GCSE’s in maths and English, you can also gain Functional Skills qualifications in these subjects on Thursdays and Fridays with a Babington skill coach, along with topics such as interview technique, and CV and cover letter writing. 

To ensure you are set up for success you will have a strong support network around you, including a mentor at Gedling Borough Council. Any travel costs will also be covered by your employer.
