Information Technology Apprenticeship

BT Apprenticeships
The possibilities are endless ….

Apprentices earn a salary and learn on the job from experienced colleagues to gain role-specific skills. In addition, apprentices attend college to work towards a nationally recognised professional qualification in their chosen career path.

In a nutshell, the main benefit of an apprenticeship is that you can earn as well as learn.

Why BT

BT is the world’s most established communications company employing 90,000 people across 170 countries which offers a world of possibilities for all globally. We help people to communicate anywhere, at any time and with any technology they want.

Known as a major technology player who pioneers the digital advances that shape and drive the information age BT help people create, collaborate and communicate better than ever before.

In the UK we are a leading communications services provider, selling products and services to consumers, small and medium sized enterprises and the public sector.

What you’ll be doing

Software roles involve working to design, develop, implement, test and support software applications that help BT to run its networks and systems. This could include anything from working on web applications, apps for smart phones and tablets or on BT’s internal systems.

There is also a broad array of network roles. This could include opportunities to test our global networks whether that means new connections that we’re building, or on existing networks. It could also include working on the planning, installing and commissioning of new network elements.

The cyber security team are operationally responsible end-end security for BT Networks and to ensure that BT is protected from network threats, attacks and vulnerabilities, both known and emerging in a forever evolving threat landscape. Cyber security apprentices contribute to the development and improvement of security processes and procedures, as well support the technical leads for specific deployment projects with responsibility for ensuring the technical integrity. You will need to understand the requirements of BT's security strategy and be able to develop vulnerability detection in line with emerging threats and ensure competant and consistent test execution. There is a clearly defined career path in this department with strong possibilities for progression to senior technical level.

All roles in IT are best suited to those with problem solving abilities and an aptitude for understanding the needs of customers.

This year BT is offering a full degree apprenticeship in IT following the launch by the Government at the end of 2014. Degree Apprenticeships allow you to complete a full honours degree alongside their employment. You will not pay student fees, and will earn a wage throughout. To be eligible you must have attained 3 A levels at grades BCC or above, or an equivalent qualification. Our full degree apprenticeships are located in London, Ipswich and Belfast.

About the training

Our apprenticeships are designed so they offer a structured programme that takes the apprentices through the skills they need to do a job well. Along the way there are targets and checks to make sure each apprentice is supported and is making progress.

Most training is delivered on the job. You will be surrounded by colleagues who are experts in their field who will deliver the learning and support to make sure you are on track and making progress. In addition time is spent at college or university with a local training provider to consolidate this learning in a classroom environment as you progress to achieving your apprenticeship.

The outcome of this blended learning method will be a vocational qualification for our apprentices which will be useful in their job and help them succeed in their future career.

Within BT you will receive plenty of support and encouragement, not only from your manager but also from our dedicated apprentice development team, who will help you create a personal development plan and coach you throughout the journey as you work towards your apprenticeship.
