Volunteers taking part in our Journalism in Samoa project will be based in Apia, the capital and largest city of Samoa. You have the choice of working in print journalism or radio journalism and both opportunities will give you excellent experience for your CV.

The print journalism placement provides a perfect opportunity for those individuals who are keen to gain experience in the competitive world of journalism and is ideal for students who are eager to gain practical hands-on experience and build a portfolio.

You will primarily be gaining experience as a reporter and would have to research and write on a variety of topics of interest. Depending on your levels of experience, there may also be opportunities to practice your photography, website design or social media management skills.

Your working day will run Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am to 5.30pm but there may be occasions where you’ll be asked to work on weekends in order to attend an event.

If you choose a radio journalism placement, you will be working for Radio Polynesia which currently owns four music focused radio stations. As a volunteer you will experience music production and broadcasting. You may be asked to assist with the running of the radio station’s website and social media accounts or may assist with all other areas of running the station.

There are no specific qualifications required in order to take part on this project however experience in advertising, marketing, IT, sound or broadcast engineering and radio transmission would be an advantage. It is recommended that volunteers bring their own laptop and camera; however shared equipment will be available.  It is essential that volunteers spend a minimum of four weeks on this particular placement.
