Laboratory Technician

Becoming a Laboratory Technician with Fera:

We are currently looking to recruit a Laboratory Technician within the GLP Analytical Chemistry section on a full time permanent basis into the Centre of Chemical Safety and Stewardship (CCSS). CCSS is a diverse scientific service programme within Fera Science Ltd, which conducts highly technical assessments for commercial and government customers. CCSS prides itself on delivering high quality, regulatory projects which adhere to and comply with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP). This ensures CCSS's scientific output is suitable for use by its clients for regulatory and legal purposes.

CCSS and its staff engage within scientific research and development, which ensures we remain at the forefront of scientific and regulatory development within chemistry, environmental fate, metabolism and ecotoxicology. The GLP Analytical Chemistry Section work across a range of projects performing a variety of techniques to analyse samples. The GLP Analytical Chemistry Section is also home to the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme (WIIS) for England and Wales. WIIS investigate deaths of wildlife where there is the possibility they have been poisoned by pesticides. What you'll be doing:

  • Be responsible for laboratory facilities by performing:
    • Daily equipment checks
    • Cleaning glassware
    • Ordering consumables
    • Stock taking
    • Instrument maintenance and calibrations
    • General laboratory housekeeping
  • Conduct work to the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) quality systems, meticulously following standard operating procedures.
  • Perform laboratory procedures using standard laboratory equipment.
  • Assist others in all aspects of laboratory and field studies in compliance with the relevant study plans / methods.

What we're looking for:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to keep clear and accurate written records of work
  • Good team working skills but with the ability to work independently as required
  • Practical IT skills in software packages including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Able to organise, prioritise and complete tasks to the required standards and to tight deadlines
  • Willingness to work with chemical substances that are potentially hazardous to health
  • Methodical approach to work with good attention to detail
