Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship Children & Young People's Workforce

This intermediate course will develop the knowledge and skills required for working with children in early years settings, such as a nursery assistant or playgroup assistant. 

This course can be delivered in your workplace or as a day release at college. You will gain evidence from your place of work that will contribute towards the achievement of your apprenticeship.


This qualification is designed to help you build the knowledge and skills needed when working with children and young people from birth to 19 years of age. It covers a diverse range of job roles and occupational areas working in children’s environments including early years and social care. 

It is suitable if you wish to work, or are working, in a supervised role in the children and young people’s workforce in England.


Mandatory units: 

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Contribute to the support of child and young person development
  • Contribute to children and young people's health and safety
  • Contribute to the support of positive environments for children and young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children and young people.


Tuesday: 12.30pm-4pm

Entry Criteria

There are no formal academic requirements for this programme, however, you will need to be employed in an appropriate setting. 

You will need to be able to demonstrate competence in both knowledge and skills. You will also require a clear enhanced DBS check. 

What next?

You could progress to a Level 3 advanced apprenticeship in childcare or a related early years area at New College Durham, or pursue a career as a nursery assistant.
